What changed

In Statement A (May 13), Lapid defends military police enforcement actions by insisting they are not targeting Haredim specifically — they arrest any Israeli youth who received a draft order and failed to appear, framing it as universal and non-discriminatory. In Statement B (May 18), just five days later, Lapid himself demands to know exactly how many deserters are Haredi vs. non-Haredi, and how many of those arrested in recent enforcement operations are Haredi vs. non-Haredi — implicitly treating Haredi identity as the central and defining variable in evaluating the enforcement. This creates a tension: he frames enforcement as non-ethnic in Statement A, then demands ethnic breakdown data in Statement B, suggesting that Haredi identity is in fact the operative lens through which he is monitoring the enforcement.
